In Taillan-Médoc, residents are drawn by lot to obtain authorization to cut down a few worn trees. A way to save money and clean up the forest.
Cutting day for beginner loggers. Trees are falling in the Taillan forest. It doesn’t seem like much, but the exercise is tough. Enthusiasm and energy are needed. Christian is not a professional lumberjack. This plot of wood belongs to the town hall of Taillan-Medoc (Gironde). He obtained the right to cut trees there, after a draw reserved for the inhabitants of the commune. “It’s the first time I’ve had the chance to be fired, so that’s a good thing. Because at the current price of wood, you have to dig everywhere intelligently“, he explains.
A long waiting list
For the National Office of Forests, this operation makes it possible to maintain the woods thanks to individuals. “It also allows us to collect dead wood, to clean up a little bit, because with the summer we’ve had, there’s always the risk of fire. So if we leave everything tangled like that, we still increase the combustible mass on the ground“, explains a forest ranger. Maintaining the forest and stocking up on wood, the idea appeals to Le Taillant: the waiting list to become a lumberjack for a day and full until 2026.
