Excluded. Gaëtane Abrial (New Star) confides in her relationship with Julien Doré

Last November, M6 boxed two anniversary programs to celebrate the 20 years of tele-hook which made the heyday of the channel. The first part, broadcast this Wednesday, February 15 in prime time, looks back on the first seasons. Among the former candidates invited to the party of New Star, 20 years old, Gaetane Abrialwith a jazzy voice, arrival in the semi-finals of season 5, in 2007, alongside Tigane Drammeh and Julien Doré. His covers of Norah Jones, Cyndi Lauper, Blondie or Alanis Morissette had enchanted the jury and the public of the time. Tonight, she will redo her cover of Zazie with I send waltzalone on the guitar, and the sublime duet with Tigane on Billie John. But what becomes of it? What memories does she have of this period when she was only 19 years old? What place does singing have in her life? The young mother confided in an interview.

Tele-Leisure : What are your best memories of this anniversary evening of New star ?

Gaetane Abrial: When I arrived on the set, I gradually plunged back into this very special universe. It was quite a strange feeling. As if I was doing a leap back over 15 years and my heart just boomed. The reunions with former candidates, especially Tigane, overwhelmed me. There was also the huge surprise of finding my former hairdresser from the show, Fred Barat, whom I greatly appreciate and Jerome Pitorin (co-host then editor-in-chief of New starEd) with whom we had a great time. It was very moving. There is also this crystalline and limpid sound on stage, it’s velvet, lace, I love being able to nuance my voice by feeling and hearing the slightest detail. It reminded me of my first time at Baltard. There is also the fact that my daughter was present that day. I wanted to share this evening with her, to embark her with me on what was a big upheaval in my life… It was very powerful.

Does your daughter Lou, who will turn 12, follow in your footsteps?

She’s always been singing. I did gigs throughout my pregnancy. And two weeks before he was born, I was still singing, guitar on my belly. I think she has it in her skin. She impresses me with the depth of her voice, her timbre and her wisdom. When she sings, she is inhabited by someone bigger than her… It moves me a lot.

Could she, in turn, participate in a tele-hook?

She has already told me that she would like to participate in The Voice Kids. But I wonder a lot. Shouldn’t she take the time to grow up, understand herself and find out who she is before exposing herself to television?

Have you kept in contact with certain candidates or members of the jury?

I haven’t kept in regular contact, but over the course of these 15 years I’ve taken some pleasure in hearing from Tigana, AlexAnd Isabella (Isabelle Ithurburu became a journalist and TV host, Editor’s note) all three of my season and also ofAndre Manoukian (with whom she collaborated on an album, Editor’s note) ! We all have our lives, singular and miles apart, and I find it very beautiful to follow our different paths…

Your duo on don’t give up with Julien Doré is one of the outstanding duos that we see again in the anniversary program on February 15… Is this still a memorable memory for you?

Oh yes ?! I did not know. I am delighted about it ! This is one of the duets that I preferred to sing on the show, if not my favorite, precisely!

There were rumors of a relationship with him at the time… We want to know, was it true?

Oh, with Julien, I think it was more than rumors ! We had a nice but brief history together indeed, between castings and live bounties. It was like a setting outside the effervescence, “resource” moments…

Do you still make music today?

I sang for many years in BON AIR, my duo with Guillaume Farré (a folk group that has had great success, especially in the Basque Country where she lives, editor’s note). It was a wonderful adventure. I am in the writing phase at the moment. I wonder a lot about the meaning of the word “sing”. In my eyes, it is much deeper than performing alone in front of a large audience and feeding my ego. The real meaning lies elsewhere.

And you organize singing workshops that you talk about on instagram…

I am also training in singing therapy. I want to transmit and accompany the other to a reconnection by voice and breath. This is not an aesthetic question, but the ethics of a voice. It tells who we are…

Could you participate in another TV show?

I would very much like play radio. It’s a means of expression that remains very spontaneous and that animates me a lot. The voice being the key element. I would dream of creating my own show. I will put everything I like into it: encounters, live, open, spontaneous exchanges, questions, music, laughter and nothing but truth!
