Ratingen/Dusseldorf.
It is also unclear whether the dead body found in Ratingen after the explosion is the mother of the suspect. The 57-year-old is silent in custody.

After the explosion in a high-rise building in Ratingen, eight seriously injured people are still being treated in hospitals in intensive care units. This was announced by a police spokesman in Düsseldorf on Monday. A 57-year-old Ratinger is said to have triggered the explosion when the police and fire brigade opened his apartment door. They suspected a helpless person in the apartment. Because the mailbox was overflowing, the landlady had informed the authorities.

Arrest warrants for nine counts of attempted murder were issued against the 57-year-old on Friday. As it became known, a police officer had rang his doorbell a few days earlier because there was an arrest warrant against Ratinger: he had not paid a fine of 30 daily rates for bodily harm. Because no one opened, the officer left again.

SPD calls for a special session of the interior committee in the state parliament

The SPD opposition in the state parliament requested a special session of the interior committee on Monday. This should take place next Monday. “It’s also about how we can better protect our security forces,” announced their domestic policy spokeswoman Christina Kampmann.

The suspect himself remained silent about what happened after his arrest. He is said to have barricaded his apartment door and thrown a container of gasoline at the emergency services. He had previously been noticed for three physical injuries.

The emergency services noticed a strong smell of decomposition

In the apartment, emergency services found a woman’s body. Whether the dead woman is the mother of the 57-year-old suspect has not yet been finally clarified. The woman had been dead for several weeks, and the emergency services had noticed a strong smell of decomposition. During a search, the police found airguns, knives and daggers in the basement.

The suspect is said to belong to the so-called prepper scene and also be a corona denier. Derived from the English “prepare” (to prepare), people who prepare for survival in the event of a disaster are referred to as preppers. (dpa)
