Over the years, Meta has faced several lawsuits from Facebook users who accuse the company of having allowed access to their user data to third parties without their consent. These lawsuits were consolidated into a class action that was accepted by Meta (without however admitting fault).

Consequently, Meta must pay a total of $725 million to eligible users. This also includes legal and administrative costs, so the actual sum paid to users will be lower. The amount paid will depend on the number of people who submit an eligible application.

Facebook owes its users $725 million, are you eligible?

To be eligible, people who have used Facebook between May 24, 2007 and December 22, 2022 must file a claim by August 25, 2023. Similarly, you must have resided in the United States at that time. The class action does not apply to Europe.

If users object to the settlement and plan to take legal action against Meta for these issues, they must withdraw before July 26, 2023. If a user does not file a claim or objection within these time limits, they will waive their right to settlement and any future legal action.

The lawsuits relate to third parties’ unauthorized access to user data, including data from users’ friends, as well as Facebook’s lack of oversight and enforcement of third parties with access to such data. The biggest problem was the access of Cambridge Analytica, a now defunct data analytics firm, to Facebook data, which was used in Donald Trump’s campaign.
