This is reported by the online portal Internet watch list from Austria. The scam is currently appearing more and more in the entire German-speaking area. Cyber criminals have now set about imitating Microsoft Defender’s warnings and displaying them on various websites via pop-up windows.
This gives the user the impression that they are receiving a warning from their Windows PC, so many unsuspecting Internet users fall for this trap. In the pop-up window, you will see notices like “Threat detected: Trojan spyware”.
“The pop-up says that your PC has been locked and that you should call Windows support. You can find the phone number directly in the message. Do not call this number under any circumstances. This warning is fake, criminals are stealing your money and data!” , Watchlist explains the scam.
No real Defender alerts
There have been similar attempts at fraud, but now the reports of such pop-up windows have increased. The windows that appear are not linked to Microsoft Defender and do not represent a warning for the Windows system. Experts suspect that the distribution is mainly via dubious websites and that the people behind the messages also advertise with the reports. If you receive a supposed Defender warning, you can first check your PC to see whether Windows has detected a threat.
Under no circumstances should you dial displayed phone numbers. Microsoft would not ask for this.
