At least six people died from bee stings Africanized after a bus with about 60 passengers fell to the bottom of a ravine in Jinotega, Nicaragua, damaging some beehives.

Among the deaths are those of Eneyda Tórrez Zelaya, 47, and her eight-year-old daughter Andrea Carolina. The other deceased reported by local media are Santos Arnulfo Calderón Castellón, 38 years old; Dilcia Flores Amparo, 32; Reyna Isabel Olivas Montalván, 84 years old; and Kenia Jazmín Soza Bonilla, 19 years old.

The accident followed by the bee attack left at least 14 injured and a four-year-old boy and a pregnant woman are in delicate condition.

The tragedy occurred yesterday when the driver of the passenger bus, identified as Santos Ismael Herrera, 22, who covers the Jinotega-San Sebastián de Yalí route, in northern Nicaragua, allegedly lost control of the unit due to mechanical damage, he left the road and fell into a coffee plantation some 50 meters deep.

In the fall, the passenger bus devastated some hives used for honey production and which housed African bees (also known as killer bees), which provoked the violent attack.

According to the health authorities in the area, quoted by the local press, the African bees stung the 45 passengers, as well as the driver of the transport unit, who were transferred to a care center in San Sebastián de Yalí and the most serious to the regional hospital of Jinotega.

The assistance and rescue of the victims was delayed due to the difficulty in reaching the bottom of the abyss where the swarm of Africanized bees was kept.

Traffic agents from the National Police went to the scene of the accident to determine the causes and responsibilities.
