Potsdam parents resist the federal trend. While Emilia and Noah were the most popular first names for newborns in Germany in 2022, according to a data collection from 423 cities, the Potsdam registry office counted Charlotte and Oskar as the most common names for newborns. For girls, the names Mia, Emma, Johanna and Leni followed in second to fifth place. Among the names for boys, the names Emil, Karl and Linus were found and only fifth place was Germany’s most popular boy’s name Noah.

In addition, the registrars also took a look at special name requests in the past year. “All the names proposed by the parents were recognized, although there were also unusual names,” says Brigitte Meier (SPD), the deputy responsible for the registry office. Rare names in girls in 2022 included Adaja, Brynja, Diamanta, Fortune, Genevieve, Irsana, Kono, Lykka, Malotta, Olive, Skyla, Wida and Yumi. For boys it was Arlo, Birkir, Codi, Dritan, Fjonn, Haldor, Jarne, Kubo, Liel, Ocke, Sico, Uebbe and Zente.

What was striking last year was a significant decline in births in the state capital compared to the year before. “A total of 2,492 babies were born in Potsdam last year,” says Meier. In 2021, on the other hand, there were significantly more babies with 2703 births. The number of newborns in 2022 was similar to two years ago, Meier reported. At that time, 2,472 births in Potsdam were recorded by the registry office. The numbers include all children born in Potsdam, not just those who live in Potsdam.
