No longer just for club sports: the “Howoge-Arena Hans-Zoschke” in Berlin-Lichtenberg will soon be available for use by daycare centers, schools, youth facilities and residents. Berlin’s Senator for Building, Andreas Geisel (SPD), will hold the first, symbolic groundbreaking on Friday, January 20, 2023 at 10 a.m.:

The arena, home of the Lichtenberg 47 football club at Normannenstraße 28, will not only be available to club athletes in the future, but will also be used by daycare centers, schools and youth facilities as well as by residents for sporting purposes. For this purpose, additional sports facilities will be built on the site – a sports band with bouldering, fitness and table tennis areas as well as a small playing field. A running track and a long jump pit will be installed for school sports.

The proposal for the redesign came from the Lichtenberg 47 association. District mayor Michael Grunst (Die Linke) speaks of a “great need for sports facilities in our growing district”, which could be better met after the redesign. So far, the stadium has been used almost exclusively for football. Around 1.5 million euros in funding from the State of Berlin for school and leisure sports now make it possible for everyone to open it up. The offer should be free to use.

“Lichtenberg is a growing district that has become more and more attractive over the years, especially for families. We have to create a wide variety of recreational and leisure activities for them,” says Andreas Geisel, Senator for Urban Development, Building and Housing. “The sports band at the Hans-Zoschke-Stadion creates a new offer for mass sports, for exercise and recreation.”

The district councilor for urban development, Kevin Hönicke (SPD), adds: “I am pleased that we can make our district even more attractive for people in the neighborhood and beyond with funds from the Senate.”
