The Guarantee Court of the city of Puerto Montt, in Chile, ordered preventive detention for the candidate who ran for president in 2021, Diego Ancalao, for forging 23,000 signatures, supposedly validated by a dead notary.

Ancalao, who is currently the director of the Indigenous Development and Leadership Foundation (Fundelin) was arrested this Friday in the framework of the investigation into an agreement of 1.2 billion pesos (a little more than one million euros) between the Government Regional de los Lagos and the Kiñe Fuxa Ruka Kimün Corporation, the Cooperativa media reported.

The Prosecutor’s Office accuses Ancalao of the crimes of money laundering, fraud and misappropriation of funds from State bodies, for which the court has decreed “at the request of the Public Ministry, the precautionary measure of preventive detention,” the prosecutor reported. regional office of Los Lagos, Carmen Gloria Wittwer, leaving the hearing that was held without access to the press.

The court made this decision “given the danger of flight and because the freedom of the accused constitutes a danger to the security of society, in addition to the seriousness of the crimes charged,” added Wittwer.

The Guarantee Court granted a period of 120 days for the development of the investigation, and ordered that the former presidential candidate comply with the precautionary measure in the Alto Bonito prison in Puerto Montt.
