Four people, including a baby, die while crossing the Rio Grande into Texas

The Marine Tactical Unit of the Department of Public Safety of Texas pulled four people from the river Saturday, including an unconscious woman and baby, Lt. Chris Olivarez of the Texas Department of Public Safety said on Twitter Monday.

Agents immediately began applying chest compressions to the woman and baby, and both were taken to the hospital, Olivarez explained. The two were pronounced dead there, he said.

The two survivors were taken into Border Patrol custody, Olivarez added.

The body of a man was recovered in the river on Sunday, and the body of a woman was found on Monday, he said. The identities of the dead are unknown because none had identification papers with them, he added.

The bodies were found in the same region where nine migrants lost their lives when they tried to cross the river in September.

During Texas’ regular legislative session, which concluded in May, lawmakers allocated more than $5 billion for border security. Days later, Gov. Greg Abbott unveiled a new initiative: floating sea barriers to be deployed at “hot spots along the Rio Grande,” as the river is known in English.

According to a June announcement by Abbott’s office, the first 1,000 feet (305 meters) of the waterborne border security device will be deployed near Eagle Pass.
