France | Pollution in the Seine cancels a swimming competition for the third time

This event calls into question the celebration of the triathlon in Paris during the Olympic Games in 2024

Pollution in the Seine River once again spoils another competition. This time, the organizers of the triathlon “Test Even”, which has been taking place since last Thursday in Paris, canceled the swimming test in the mixed relay.

This forced the triathlon, which counts as a qualifying event for the Olympic Games, to be reduced to cycling and running.

At the moment, there has been no clarification as to why the waters did not pass the quality tests. The deputy mayor of Paris, Pierre Rabadán, affirms: “We still do not have an explanation for the deterioration of the water quality. It was observed with two measurements that showed discrepancies. This is what we have said before. An investigation is being carried out today to try to understand the origin of this deterioration”.

On Saturday the authorities also canceled the para-triathlon swimming event and on August 6 another event that counted for the World Cup. These events call into question France’s goal of making the Seine River an area suitable for bathing during the events of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. A plan that began in 2016 and with a total cost of 1.6 billion euro.

Tony Estanguet, head of the Paris 2024 organizing committee, stressed that there is no “plan B” for next year’s sporting event, while Pierre Rabadan, deputy mayor of Paris, said an investigation is underway.
