Free RIPTA bus fare in Rhode Island extended until the end of September

The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority announced Wednesday that it will extend the R-Line fare-free pilot program through September 30.

The pilot program was supported by $2.5 million from the state budget. RIPTA said that the actual costs of the program exceeded the funds and that it is not financially feasible to continue this program indefinitely, reports WJAR.

RIPTA said the program was scheduled to end on August 31, but was extended to allow time to notify passengers of upcoming changes.

Passengers will be required to pay the full fare beginning October 1. The fee is $2 for cash boarding or $2 for an hour of unlimited rides with Wave.
