Nearly 30,000 km in a 100% electric SUV, that’s the challenge Chris Ramsey set himself at the wheel of the Nissan Ariya.

Electric cars still need to prove themselves. At least that’s what Nissan thinks, as it is about to embark on a rather unique adventure with its latest electric model. The Japanese manufacturer plans to rally the North Pole to the South Pole at the wheel of a Nissan Ariya. The 27,000 km long journey is to be carried out by Chris and Julie Ramsey, a couple of British adventurers. The pilot has already had the opportunity to embark on a similar experience since he had traveled nearly 16,000 km in Mongolia, in 2017, aboard a Nissan Leaf.

However, the new challenge turns out to be of an entirely different magnitude. In particular, the weather conditions that the two adventurers should face. They are the ones who explain that they will not take to the road with the same Ariya as ordinary mortals. Indeed, their vehicle, an e-4Force version with dual engine in all-wheel drive, will be prepared by Arctic Trucks, a specialist in the matter.

Cut for the poles

How will this Ariya be different from those you might pass on the street? It will have a higher suspension, a specific reinforced body, off-road tires and underbody. On the other hand, no change in the battery, it is the large block of 87 kWh which will be there. Nevertheless, taking into account the adaptations made on this model, it will be necessary to expect a lesser autonomy than the 500 km of the commercial version.

In a video presentation of the project, Nissan also reveals some of the modifications carried out in the premises of Arctic Trucks and gives an appointment “soon” for the start of the expedition. Indeed, when the project was announced, Chris and Julie Ramsey indicated that they wanted to hit the road in March 2023.
