Fujifilm warns against updating the firmware for certain cameras using the “Camera Remote” software. Users of the XT-5, XT-4, XT-3, X-S10, X-T30 and X-T30 II camera models should initially refrain from installing the update this way. In a service message, Fujifilm points out that in rare cases the cameras can become non-functional and freeze at the end of the update.

This is only the case if the update was imported via the “Camera Remote” software via smartphone or tablet, it says in the Message continue. Updating the firmware via an SD card runs without errors. From January 19, 2023, new versions that no longer contain the error should be made available on the support pages of the cameras.

Meanwhile, Fujifilm has upgraded a number of functions with version 3.0 of its firmware for the X-H2S camera. Most notably, the autofocus capabilities have been improved in a few areas, both in subject tracking and in the user interface. As with many other manufacturers, the Fujis boast of “artificial intelligence”, more precisely: machine learning, with the function of always focusing on a moving object. To do this, AI models are trained on certain patterns, which has now happened for more types of motifs. Not only airplanes, but also drones and insects can keep the cameras in focus.

In general, Fuji has apparently improved its autofocus algorithms, as the company shows in a YouTube video. In it, the heads of the athletes are almost always recognized even in a motocross race and a basketball game, which then results in a sharp image. This should work better now, especially if the subject only makes up a small part of the picture. This also applies to strong backlighting, when a person is standing in profile or is briefly covered by another object.

In order to assess the sharpness, there is now also the focus peaking function for the Live View view, which is known for video cameras or external displays. The area of the image in which there are particularly high-contrast edges is highlighted in color. This is mainly useful for delicate manual sharpening. Also new is one in the German language PDF for the update so-called “focus measuring device”. This allows you to select an area of the image and the camera will then indicate if the focus point is in front of that area.

In addition to these functions, there are numerous smaller improvements, for example when working with accessories such as the data transmitter FT-XH and the tripod handle TG-BT1. The latter can now also be used as a remote control for zooming with motorized lenses from Fuji. The updates are free on the download pages for the Fuji X-H2S available.
