For its Galaxy Z Fold 5, Samsung would choose to review the design of its folding screen by integrating technology that is already found in some Chinese competitors, but with a “little extra” that could make all the difference.

The Galaxy Z Fold 4 is undoubtedly one of the best folding smartphones on the market. However, it is not free from flaws. Samsung could just come and correct the hinge system of the main screen so criticized on the current model, among other improvements.

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 could take the right fold

According to Korean media Naver, the fifth iteration of the folding tablet (or folding smartphone) from Samsung could integrate a screen with a hinge in the shape of a drop of water. This would decrease the visibility of the crease in the middle of the screen, while allowing the Galaxy Z Fold 5 to close completely flat.

For comparison, the Galaxy Z Fold 4, like its predecessor, has a “U”-shaped screen that has the two problems mentioned above. Today, some competitors, such as the Oppo Find N2 or the Motorola Razr 2022, are already adopting this type of hinge. On the other hand, the latter do not benefit from one of the advantages of the folding Samsung: the IP68 waterproof certification. A difference which could explain certain choices of the Korean manufacturer.

Indeed, we can be surprised to see a Samsung patent dating from 2016 and which already presents this famous hinge in the shape of a drop of water. Why has the manufacturer not yet used this mechanism, thus letting the competition get ahead of it?

The answer may come from the famous waterproof certification. The brand was probably waiting to be able to offer this new hinge without abandoning water resistance, which is a significant selling point for a high-end product. With this new design, the durability of the phone would be further improved, promising ever more openings and closings throughout its life cycle.

Galaxy S23: good news, Samsung could get rid of this model

The main module would be accompanied by a 64 Mpx telephoto lens offering an x2 optical zoom and a 12 Mpx ultra-wide-angle. Rumors that should be taken with a grain of salt since Samsung has already upgraded its camera module with the Z Fold 4 and does not usually change this every year. “Wait and see”, as our Anglo-Saxon friends say.
