Gary Oldman confesses that he is very critical of his work

Actors “are always hypercritical” of their work, Oldman declared at a press conference in Cannes, where he participated in the premiere of Partnope, by the Italian Paolo Sorrentino.

“If I saw one of my performances and thought ‘My God, how good that is’, that would be a sad day. Because my best work will always be next year’s,” he commented.

The criticism

Oldman had recently described his role in Harry Potter as ‘mediocre’. “I didn’t want to disparage anyone who is a fan of Harry Potter and the films” of the series, he said.

The interpreter revealed that he had not read the five books of the series, in which he plays the character Sirius Black. “If he had known from the beginning the fate of the character, he would have faced it differently,” he said.

In Partnope, competing for the Palme d’Or, Oldman plays the writer John Cheever, who struggled with alcoholism all his life.

“I just celebrated 27 years of sobriety,” Oldman revealed in the press room, prompting applause. “When Paolo told me ‘I want you to play this sad, melancholic, drunk poet’, I replied ‘Sure, I know what that is!'”
