Google has started making the split keyboard feature available in the Gboard Beta app for Android tablets and folding devices. This comes a year after the company started testing the feature.

The new keyboard can be separated into two parts and each one is positioned at one end of the screen, making it easier to use the gadget with both hands. To make everything even more accessible, the “G” and “V” keys are duplicated on both sides of the keyboard, but this option can be disabled in the settings, if the user wants to. Also, you can easily switch between split and standard keyboard from the taskbar.

More attention to big screens

The update is available as of Gboard version 12.9.21 and can be enabled in the app’s preferences. The news comes a few days after Google unveiled the foldable Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet at the latest Google I/O. The device is scheduled to launch next month, so it’s possible that the split keyboard feature will gradually appear for all users.

Gboard has been getting some tweaks from Google lately. In addition to the split keyboard, which greatly facilitates typing on large screens, the app can gain quick access to AI-powered imaging and has received improvements that make it easier to customize shortcuts.
