NoMay 27 marks the 60th anniversary of the death of Aquilino Ribeiro and, to commemorate this event, the municipalities of Moimenta da Beira, Paredes de Coura, Sernancelhe and Vila Nova de Paiva, together with the Aquilino Ribeiro Foundation, prepared a national program of events that was presented today.

The objective of this initiative, which will run until May 2024, is “to honor the writer and promote the territories that are an essential part of his life geography”, indicated the organization.

In this context, more than two dozen cultural initiatives are scheduled, which also involve the writer’s family, the University of Aveiro, the University of Lisbon (through the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning, the Center for Geographical Studies, the Center for Lusophone and European Literatures and Cultures), the Estoril Higher School of Hospitality and Tourism, the National Pantheon and Bertrand Editora.

The celebrations begin on the anniversary of the writer’s death, at the Lapa Sanctuary, in Sernancelhe, with a visit to the Aquilino Ribeiro Foundation, an “Aquilinian fair” and the presentation of issue 5 of Revista Aquilino.

Later this month, the requalification of the Casa Grande de Romarigães, which served as the setting for one of the most emblematic works of the author, in Paredes de Coura, is inaugurated.

In June, the Lisbon Book Fair will be the stage for an initiative by Bertrand around “Aquilino and the classics” and the translations he made of works by Xenophon and Cervantes.

In Vila Nova de Paiva, the 17th opens with the presentation of the re-edition of the work ‘Volfrâmio’, with a preface by Augusto Santos Silva and José Lello, followed by an “Aquilinian snack” at the Minas de Volfrâmio do Rebentão (Queiriga) and a concert.

On the 8th of July, the Aquilino Ribeiro Foundation, in Moimenta da Beira, opens its doors for an “Aquilinian dinner” and presentation of the books ‘At the table with Aquilino’ and ‘Corações com alma’.

At the end of the month there will be conversations with Ricardo Araújo Pereira and Vítor Paulo Pereira, in Paredes de Coura.

The month of September arrives with a conversation around the “landscape of the Casa Grande de Romarigães”, led by geographers Álvaro Domingues and Aquilino Machado (grandson of Aquilino Ribeiro), in Paredes de Coura, and with the presentation of the re-edition of ‘A via sinuosa’, with a preface by João Soares, followed by a concert by the Cem Notas Orchestra, again at the foundation, in Moimenta da Beira.

In this same parish, where the writer spent part of his childhood, “gastronomic weekends dedicated to Aquilino Ribeiro” will take place throughout the month of October, in an initiative called ‘Moimenta with flavor’.

On the 23rd of October, the first day of literary tourism takes place in Estoril, entitled ‘Literary tourism in the landscapes of Aquilino’, organized by the Escola Superior de Hotelaria e Turismo do Estoril and the Center for Geographical Studies of the University of Lisbon.

In November, the international journey ‘Aquilino Ribeiro — on the 60th anniversary of the writer’s death (1962 — 2023)’ is scheduled to take place, to revisit the author’s life and work.

This meeting will take place on the 9th, at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon, organized by the Department of Portuguese Literature and Culture and the Center for Geographical Studies.

On the 17th and 18th, an Aquilian Congress will take place, organized by the University of Aveiro, at the Municipal Auditorium of Sernancelhe, with the presence of several university professors, the rector of that institution and the journalist Henrique Monteiro.

In the same auditorium, the photographic exhibition ‘An Aquilinian script’ will be on display.

To close the year, the Grande Oriente Lusitano store, in Lisbon, promotes a session evocative of the work and the social, political and ethical thought of the writer, while, in Vila Nova de Paiva, the comic book ‘ The legend of the judge of Barrelas’ – inspired by a famous sentence eternalized by Aquilino Ribeiro in the book ‘Geografia sentimental’ — by Maria Inês, with illustration by José Peixoto.

The program resumes in March 2024, in Vila Nova de Paiva and will end in May, at the National Pantheon, in Lisbon.

Aquilino Gomes Ribeiro was born in 1885, in the parish of Carregal, Sernancelhe, but it was in Soutosa, municipality of Moimenta da Beira, that he spent part of his childhood. In 1906 he settled in Lisbon, dedicating himself to the defense of the Republic through conspiratorial texts.

His work as a whole includes titles such as the memoir ‘Cinco réis de gente’, the children’s book ‘Romance da fox’, and novels such as ‘Terras do demo’, ‘Volfrâmio’, ‘A casa grande de Romarigães’ and ‘When wolves howl’.
