MIAMI.- Nurses are an essential part of the health system’s line of action to guarantee quality medical care to society, but they face some difficulties because it can be a demanding and challenging profession.
Although nursing is a well-paying career in the United States, with a median annual salary of more than $94,000 and one of the lowest unemployment rates, some entities offer better career benefits such as financial well-being and lifestyle than others.
With National Nurses Week, celebrated in the country from May 6 to 12, approaching, personal finance website WalletHub today released its report on the best and worst states for nurses of 2024, to help professionals of nursing, especially recent graduates, to choose the most suitable place
The authors compared prospects across all 50 states across 20 key metrics ranging from nursing job openings per capita to average salaries.
Best states for nurses
According to the analysis, the state that provides the best working conditions for nurses is Washington DC, with a score of 66.84.
In the US capital, nurses have very high average incomes and one of the highest job growth rates.
“The Evergreen State also has some of the highest-ranked nursing schools in the country. Additionally, nurses can avoid burnout because Washington restricts mandatory overtime,” the report notes.
The second best state for nurses is Maine. The Pine State scored 60, 77, and has one of the highest numbers of nursing and residential care facilities per capita.
Maine has created a large number of job opportunities for nurses, as there is a great need for nurses for the town’s growing 65+ population.
Additionally, it has the fifth-lowest average tuition cost per credit for people who want to pursue an online Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, which can help earn a degree more affordably.
In third place is New Hampshire, with a score of 59.53, because it offers job opportunities for those who want to practice nursing.
The Granite State has the most nursing vacancies per capita and a large number of hospitals, as well as some of the best nursing schools in the country.
“Like the other major states, New Hampshire also restricts mandatory overtime for nurses, which helps prevent them from being taken advantage of and overworked,” Whalett Hub noted.
Fourth place is occupied by Montana with an evaluation of 59.11, followed by New Mexico in fifth place with 58.80 points.
The top 10 of the best states for nurses are completed by:
- Oregon
- Minnesota
- Wyoming
- Connecticut
- Arizona
Where does Florida stand?
According to WalletHub, Florida ranked 12th on the list of states with the best faculty for nurses, with an overall score of 55.03.
The Sunshine State is located among the main states in the opportunity and competition category with 4 points, in the work environment range it has a score of 3 and in opportunity and competition it obtained a weighting of 40.
While in job offer per capita Florida is in 46th place and in competition for 2030 in fifth. In addition, it is the first state with the highest population growth over 65 years of age by 2030.
Wallet Hub analyst Cassandra Happe noted that nurses are among the most essential workers in the country, “as we have seen very well in recent years. Because they work in such a demanding profession, they deserve to work in places that compensate them adequately and offer them reasonable working conditions.”
