Google wants to expand a video campaign against incorrect information on the Internet to Germany. The company announced this on February 13. Among other things, it is about “fake news” about Ukrainian refugees in Germany. Jigsaw, a Google company, will be using a new approach in Germany for the first time in the coming months: a video campaign based on the “prebunking method”. Germany is the second region worldwide in which Jigsaw is launching a corresponding campaign. In 2022, prebunking videos were used for the first time in Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

“Prebunking” is a scientifically researched communication technique that helps users to recognize and reject future attempts to manipulate them with false information. This is intended to help increase society’s resilience to disinformation and related narratives and manipulation techniques.

“Prebunking” is typically done through short videos that explore a common disinformation manipulation technique, such as scaremongering. In Germany, the videos in question will focus on manipulation techniques and narratives that are widespread in this country. This includes the method of conscious decontextualization, i.e. videos or photos taken out of context in order to spread false narratives.

Perhaps the state should do something like this more often. You might trust that more than a company.
