Google’s “red alert” with regard to artificial intelligence is now leading to the creation of a new department that is said to specialize in the development of such technologies. The group summarizes its AI activities under the name “DeepMind” in order to stand up to Microsoft.

Like Google DeepMind in one Blog entry announced that a completely new division will be created under this name after the Google parent company Alphabet had already taken over DeepMind in 2014. The resulting team will be supported by the “Google Brain” team of the search engine giant’s research department.

‘Greatest social, economic and scientific transformation’

Ultimately, they want to ensure that Google is at the forefront when it comes to driving “one of the greatest social, economic and scientific transformations in history”. Basically, it’s all about bundling Google’s activities in the field of AI and accelerating development by making decisions at a central point.

The head of the new department is the former CEO of DeepMind Demis Hassabis, while Google’s previous AI boss Jeff Dean is resigning as “Chief Scientist” to report directly to Google CEO Sundar Pichai. Google’s research department should remain in place. Google Research should continue to work on computer science topics in the future and deal with things like algorithms, privacy, theories, security, quantum computing, health, climate, sustainability and “responsible AI”, according to Pichai. Only recently it became known that Google probably has numerous internal critics when it comes to its AI development.

Employees called Google’s first AI chatbot, which goes by the name of Bard, a “pathological liar” that in many cases simply provides false information that could endanger the health and life of users.
