Google Photos could soon be getting an overhaul, according to the app’s code, which should suit those of you who like taking RAW photos. The latter have so far been stored on Pixel smartphones, for example, but also as standard on other Android devices in a separate folder. For those, backup on Google Photos is disabled by default. Accordingly, the recordings do not pop up in your Foots feed / tab on Google Photos. That could change in the near future.

In itself, it makes sense that the RAW images do not automatically migrate to Google Photos, because these are of course rather big fish, which should actually only form the basis for further post-processing. In the app version 6.20 of Google Photos, however, preparations are now being made in the background for RAW recordings to be visible in the Google Photos feed by default, regardless of the backup status.

But the whole thing is still a bit confusing as reported by 9to5Google. The code contains somewhat contradictory references to securing and displaying the RAW content. But in the end it should also be possible to display the RAW photos on Google Photos in the app’s feed without saving them in the cloud.

It may still be a while before this new feature is distributed. At least the preparations in the code are running.
