The island of Mykonos is facing a growing problem: illegal construction. As tourists prepare to arrive, misdeeds raise questions.

Mykonos: the city of all excesses where money attracts unscrupulous promoters. A native of the island, born 68 years ago, has always known the magnificent landscapes. He saw them transform visibly. “Up there, there were only a few houses, there in front, it was the same, there was almost nothing. But from 1992, the buildings sprouted like mushrooms and we, the inhabitants, we lost our island”, he confides. In 30 years, Mykonos has been covered with buildings.

Watchmen on construction sites

Some coastlines have become concreted and in recent years, the phenomenon has accelerated. New houses are being built in areas that have been classified as unbuildable and some villas are larger than authorized. “There are lookouts on the construction sites, they have a car and if the police arrive, everyone gets on board and they disappear”, details a professional. The Ministries of Public Order and the Environment did not respond to interview requests.
