– When we have a lot of rainfall in late autumn and early spring, the groundwater fills up, that is what has happened right now, says Måns Lindell, water manager at the County Administrative Board.

The large amounts of rainfall have caused flooding in some parts of the county recently. At the same time, groundwater levels have been raised in most places thanks to the rainfall.

– We have many activities in society that depend on groundwater. It is about drinking water in some municipalities, agriculture and some industries. So it is very positive that the water reservoir has now been filled for the summer, says Måns Lindell.

Does this mean that the residents of the county will avoid irrigation bans this summer?

– No, it does not. We must remember that the trend is for us to have increasingly drier summers due to climate change. However, it looks good and we are better equipped than in many years, says Måns Lindell.

At Sweden’s geological survey, assessors believe that it would have been even better with snow that melts slowly instead of all the rain, see more in the clip:

“It would have been better with more snow that was allowed to melt during March and April and added to the groundwater then instead,” says groundwater expert Bo Thunholm. Photo: TT/Julio C. Gonzalez/SGU
