Not only was it the first fully 3D installment in the series, but GTA III it was also a title that marked a turning point for Rockstar Games and for the way in which the software house continued to develop its ambitious videogame productions over the years. This was stated by Aaron Garbut, art director at Rockstar North.

In a recent interview granted to Game InformerGarbut discussed just how good GTA III turned out to be essential for the future of the study in the gaming sector. Obviously the Grand Theft Auto franchise has come a long way since then but – specifies the art director – the third installment of the series has set the standards and the artistic direction that the series would have undertaken in the future.

GTA III set the standard for how we make games. We have [imparato] so much, but most of all we learned how difficult it was. Creating worlds with the density of detail and content that we wanted and that could be enjoyed quickly, all of this has all sorts of complications. The fact that content has to exist in this model alongside open-world systems: the ambient world, cops, gangs, and the like, this creates even more complications. I guess we learned that we were not afraid to take a difficult path if we felt the results were worth it. And the approach of systems interacting to create complexity is something we continue to build on.”.

If GTA III forms the cornerstone of what the franchise has come to be today, the hope is that GTA VI may represent the future of the Rockstar Games series. At the moment we have no official confirmation, but the well-known insider Tom Henderson said he was certain that in 2023 we will see an official reveal of GTA VI.
