Luckily for everyone, barely Todd Phillips’ feature film hit theaters in October 2019, Joaquin Phoenix was able to prove that he was more than convincing in the role of Gotham’s clown.
Taking place in the middle of the garbage collectors’ strike, it is in a filthy city and on the verge of social explosion that we find the man who is still called Arthur Fleck, a failed and broke actor that society is not close to accepting. The film will then take the form of a real psychological and social thriller which will take it very quickly beyond the “simple” comic book film.
With a screenplay co-written by Todd Phillips himself and Scott Silver (8 Mile, Fighter), spectators were able to discover a story firmly rooted in reality inspired by the greatest films of Martin Scorsese (Taxi Driver, The King of Comedy). Enough to convince both the press and the general public of the quality of this adaptation, all with almost no mention of Batman in the film. In the end, Joker was a real hit at the box office since it brought in more than a billion dollars, a real record for an R-rated film in the United States.

First presented at the 76th Venice International Film Festival (from which it left with the Golden Lion), it was finally released in American theaters thereafter before ending up with us. After having made its way around the world, the film also won the 2020 Oscars, winning Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix and Best Music for Hildur Guðnadóttir.
And it is finally from today December 23, 2022 that all Netflix subscribers will be able to enjoy this Joker on any connected device. And if you want even more once the credits are reached, know that Todd Phillips is currently working on the sequel to the film. Scheduled for October 2024, five years after the release of the first part, this sequel will be titled “Joker: Folie à Deux” and should even be a musical. Something to arouse anyone’s curiosity…
