The expansion of solar systems in Germany is currently even exceeding what are considered to be very ambitious targets. This should also be one of the reasons why those responsible for Robert Habeck are currently receiving massive counter-fire.

At a conference, the Federal Minister of Economics announced, according to a report by Business Insider with the fact that 2.7 gigawatts of photovoltaic capacity were newly installed in the first quarter. Even if development only continues at this level, a total of more than 10 gigawatts would be added over the course of the year. The federal government’s previous plans, which some considered too optimistic, assumed 9 gigawatts this year.

However, it is to be expected that the numbers will even increase in the coming months. Because the course is being set at various levels in the ministry to achieve this. Habeck explained that he wants the “Solar Package 1” to be fully worked out and agreed before the summer break, at least in the federal cabinet.

This package includes, among other things, various measures to reduce the bureaucratic hurdles involved in setting up and connecting solar systems both on open spaces and on roofs. In particular, the use of photovoltaics on apartment buildings and also the so-called balcony solar systems should be made significantly easier. The expansion of production capacities in Germany and Europe as well as the training of skilled workers are also part of the project.

Success provokes opponents

The various measures are intended to ensure that the future expansion targets can also be achieved – because the federal government wants to increase the capacity increase to 13 gigawatts in the coming year, then to 18 gigawatts and finally to 22 gigawatts in 2026. To this end, further political decisions will be made after Solar Package 1.

Of course, this is a thorn in the side of all those who have done good business with fossil fuels and do not want to have them taken away from them. A campaign against the architect of the expansion of renewable energies – Secretary of State Patrick Graichen – is being pushed forward with corresponding stubbornness. Various representatives of the Union parties, who maintain close connections to the established energy companies, and the publications of the Axel Springer publishing house stand out in particular. Its largest shareholder KKR maintains numerous investments in fossil energy projects.

Summary

  • Expansion of solar systems in Germany exceeds ambitious targets: 2.7 gigawatts in the 1st quarter.
  • Solar package 1: Reduction of bureaucratic hurdles, expansion of production, training of specialists.
  • Next goals – 2023: 13 gigawatts, 2026: 22 gigawatts.
