Havoc caused by strong thunderstorms affects traffic in Northeast DC

Trees that fell after storms hit the DC area on Saturday were still blocking roads and disrupting traffic Monday morning. Portions of the George Washington Memorial Parkway were closed.

The northern section of the GW Parkway has been closed for two days from Spout Run Parkway to the Beltway as crews work to remove trees, the National Park Service (NPS) reported Sunday.

“Impact to drivers during Monday morning rush hour: Large portions of the northern section of George Washington Memorial Parkway temporarily closed as crews work to remove downed trees after yesterday’s storm,” @NPSNewsDC tweeted.

Starting at 7 a.m., cars were diverted off the parkway with orange cones at Spout Run Parkway. An estimate for when the highway will reopen has not yet been released.

NPS reported that numerous trees fell on the Clara Barton Parkway in Maryland.

Downed trees and branches remained strewn along highways in northwest DC Monday morning.

On Arizona Avenue, off Loughboro Road NW, a pole with power lines and a transformer snapped in half. Loughboro Road was littered with downed power lines and tree limb debris.

A large tree with roots taller than a person stands on Massachusetts Avenue NW near Sheridan Circle.

For her part, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser said 311 has received more than 500 calls since Saturday asking for help with tree removal.

Below is the list of roads closed for storm cleanup (last updated at 7 am):
