Microsoft has released a revised reliability update KB4023057 for various versions of Windows. All Windows 10 versions from 20H2 and Windows 11 versions 21H2 and 22H2 are now addressed.

This update is now referred to as the “Integrity Tools” (Windows Update Service Components) update by the Windows team. The KB number 4023057 has remained the same. Previously, for years, the periodic updates were called compatibility updates or reliability updates.

The update is available immediately and is already being distributed automatically to all Windows versions that are still supported. The individual update packages were renewed a few days ago, so it is possible that you have already received or can obtain the update.

The revised version of KB4023057 is available for end users via the automatic Windows update function. The independent updates can also be found via the Microsoft Update Catalog, but the Windows Server Update Service (WSUS) is not used as a publication channel.

According to Microsoft, the update is not required on devices managed through Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). The update services take care of the optimization there.

No information about the changes

KB4023057, previously distributed as a so-called reliability or compatibility update, is released regularly with minor revisions. Microsoft does not give details about the changes. What is new, however, is the dichotomy, which Microsoft explains as follows:

Microsoft Update Health Tools is offered to devices via Windows Update as update KB4023057. This update applies to both Windows consumer and commercial devices with a slightly different purpose and functionality:

  • On Windows consumer devices, this update helps restore the proper functioning of Windows Update.
  • For commercial devices, this update is recommended for the WUfB (Windows Update for Business) deployment service to manage feature and quality updates.

It is intended for all Windows users willing to update and only addresses the update components, ensuring a seamless “update experience” according to Microsoft.

What is meant by this is, among other things, the elimination of errors that could occur, for example, when updates are skipped or due to unforeseen compatibility problems with individual hardware and software components. The update therefore checks hardware and software in advance for compatibility and known problems as well as set up update blocks.

KB4023057 states:

The Microsoft Update Integrity Tools are required to accelerate security updates through Microsoft Intune and Microsoft Graph.

This update should install automatically if your device is connected to Windows Update services and allows automatic updates. If your device is not receiving regular quality updates due to low disk space or low activity, this can prevent the device from installing Update Integrity Tools. If the client is not currently installed, you can try triggering a normal Windows update scan. Alternatively, you can manually download and install Update Health Tools from the Microsoft Download Center.
