Dortmund.
Dortmunder Stadtwerke DEW21 is back to using oil for heating – but only in emergencies. This should make district heating in the city safer.

Many households in the Dortmund city center are ans district heating network connected. With the complete modernization of the network, there is now another innovation: DEW21 is back to oil. But only in emergencies, the provider assures. the two new oil heating containers on Weißenburger Strasse only start up at “peak load times” in a “gas shortage situation”, according to a statement.

Actually, the district heating comes completely from the waste heat the Deutsche Gasruss-Werke in the harbour. For this purpose, in the summer of 2022, the municipal utilities had the old gas power plant on the Weissenburger Strasse turned off, which had previously been fed with gas-generated water vapor into Dortmund’s district heating network. Although the Gasrußwerke also use natural gas to produce their industrial soot (“carbon blacks”) – the waste heat not used by the factory no longer deflagrates.

District heating in Dortmund: gas and oil if waste heat is not enough

On particularly cold days jump three Gas central heating systems to heat the district heating network sufficiently. Instead of being fed centrally from the old power plant, the mini gas power plants feed the heat into the grid from three different locations – Adlerstraße, Weißenburger Straße and Lindenhorst/Hafen.

If necessary, at peak load times less gas to consume serve the two additional ones Oil heating container on Weißenburger Strasse (capacity 19MW), the statement goes on to say. “Thus, DEW21 provides for a possible gas shortage” and makes heating “less dependent on natural gas”.

From 2030, the Dortmunder Stadtwerke want to completely move away from natural gas: then it should green hydrogen drive the three energy centers when the waste heat from the gas black plants is not enough. And by 2035, DEW21 wants to develop further heat sources – for example waste wood garbage or large heat pumps.
