Germany, land of breweries and beer traditions. It’s not that easy to choose a place that has the best of all beers. Or?

Beer country Germany: This is where the record holder lives when it comes to measuring, he managed 26 mugs according to the “Guinness Book of Records”. And here there is a higher density of breweries than in almost any other country in the world.

With so much to choose from, is it even possible to confidently choose just one city from which the very best German beer comes?

A lot of draws – and Munich fans

In cooperation with the opinion research institute Civey, t-online asked people all over Germany about their favorite beer in big cities. And the answers reveal: It’s not that easy to commit yourself. 38 percent of respondents did not want to give a clear vote for one of the cities to choose from. One reason for the fact that further surveys on the subject will take a deeper look into the various regions in the coming week.

However, there was an overwhelming majority among those willing to make decisions: Munich is by far the most important beer metropolis in Germany. Whether clear, yellow and bottom-fermented, with more original wort for the festival or top-fermented, with a strong note of yeast and often cloudy – the city of the Oktoberfest has a lot to offer when it comes to beer.

Beer survey: Kölsch is particularly popular with young people

Far behind are Cologne with seven percent, Hamburg with five percent, Berlin and Düsseldorf with four percent each, Leipzig with three percent and Stuttgart with two percent. Frankfurt brings up the rear with one percent, but it would certainly have won the Äppelwoi survey.

Broken down by age group, there is hardly a different picture: regardless of whether they are pensioners or young professionals, a striking number do not want to commit themselves – and those who do do so are more likely to vote for Munich. Nevertheless, there is one special feature: the extremely soft and mild Kölsch is particularly popular with young people.

Finally, an East-West comparison shows that when it comes to the beer question, citizens in the East have even greater difficulties in coming to a clear decision than do Westerners. Otherwise, local beers are appreciated. And Munich wins across the country.

Editor’s note: The range of possible answers was technically limited. Therefore, we have initially limited ourselves to the most populous cities in Germany. But: In the coming week we want to delve deeper into the different regions of Germany with further surveys on the best beer. This survey was just the beginning.
