Hilary upgrades to a category 2 hurricane in the Pacific but still far from the coast of Mexico

According to the National Hurricane Center of the United States (NHC, for its acronym in English), Hilary had maximum winds of 165 kilometers per hour (105 miles per hour) at noon and was located 805 kilometers (500 miles) south southeast of the Cabo San Lucas, in Baja California Sur.

Its strength is expected to continue to build rapidly through Thursday and could become a major hurricane by evening or early Friday.

The hurricane was moving to the west-northwest at about 14 mph (22 km/h). This track is expected to continue overnight, then turn northwest on Friday morning and then north, approaching the Baja California peninsula over the weekend.

Hilary is expected to produce 3 to 6 inches of rainfall, with isolated maximum amounts of 8 inches, across parts of the Baja California peninsula through Monday morning and locally significant flash flooding could occur.

Heavy rain associated with Hilary is also expected in the southwestern United States from Friday through early next week, peaking on Sunday and Monday, the NHC said.
