Hispanic father dies struck by driver fleeing from police, according to authorities

A family demands justice following the death of a Hispanic father who was struck by a fleeing driver in Prince George’s County.

The Maryland prosecutor’s office identified the victim of the accident that occurred on August 13 as Rogelio Sánchez Gómez, 44, who was traveling in a car in Suitland with his children when the crash occurred.

The minors only suffered minor injuries, but those of the heart from losing their father are irreparable.

The death of Sánchez Gómez was caused by a man who, allegedly after fleeing from the police, lost control of his vehicle and collided with the victim’s.

“The car went very hard on my dad. Afterwards he was bleeding,” said little XYZ.

The victim’s family continues to assimilate the situation.

“They took him to the hospital, the two children were with him. The youngest and the oldest who is 14 years old now,” said Patricia Lobos, the victim’s sister-in-law. “There are no words that comfort these children.”

The father of the minors was taken to the hospital after the impact as the attacker fled, leaving a loaded weapon inside his vehicle, according to authorities. Shortly after he was arrested by the authorities.

Sánchez Gómez only survived until August 15.

“On behalf of the authorities, we want justice to be done, because what happened to him is not fair. He was a man who was waiting to pass the light. When… this man came to impact him,” Lobos said.

The crisis the family is going through is not only emotional, but also economic, and the authorities are demanding justice.

“They were a working family but still, these expenses are not expected,” said Lobos. “He was a hard-working man, a responsible man for his family. He was the breadwinner of this family. Now they have left a broken family, an incomplete family.”

The pursuit of the alleged perpetrator began after a report to 911 that the man was firing on the town of Morningside.

The Maryland District Attorney’s Independent Investigations Division reports that the investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
