PFor the prize jury, the work of Hélène Carrère d’Encausse, born in Paris in 1929, “is probably the most substantive contribution” of recent decades to “knowledge of the Soviet Union and Russia, one of the essential themes for understanding of the contemporary world”.

The historian’s work includes research monographs, biographies and large essays “of historical interpretation”, as can be read in the minutes of the prize’s jury, which also highlights the work of Hélène Carrère d’Encausse as a Member of the European Parliament between 1994 and 1995 .

“Consistent with her historiographical specialization, and as a Member of the European Parliament, she dealt preferably with relations between the European Union and Russia”, reads in the same text.

The historian is also an elected member of the French Academy and has been the “perpetual secretary” of this institution since 1999, being the first woman to hold the position.

“Hélène Carrère d’Encausse is one of the most brilliant, original and distinguished personalities in French historiography and contemporary European thought”, says the jury of the Princess of Asturias Prize for Social Sciences 2023.

The Princess of Asturias Social Sciences Award distinguishes “creative and/or research works in history, law, linguistics, pedagogy, political science, psychology, sociology, ethics, philosophy, geography, economics, demography and anthropology, as well as the disciplines within each of these areas”.

In previous years, this prize has been awarded to Mexican archaeologist Eduardo Matos Moctezuma (2022), Indian economist Amartya Sen (2021), Turkish economist Dani Rodrik (2020), sociologist Alejandro Portes (2019), American philosopher Michael J. Sandel (2018), the British David Attenborough (2009), the former President of Ireland Mary Robinson (2006) and the American economist Paul Krugman (2004), among others.

This was the third of eight Princess of Asturias Awards to be awarded this year, in what is the 43rd edition of these awards.

Italian professor, writer and philosopher Nuccio Ordine was awarded the 2023 Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities to American actress Meryl Streep for the Arts.

In the coming weeks, the awards for Sport, Literature, International Cooperation, Scientific and Technical Research and Concordia will be decided.

Eight Princess of Asturias Awards are awarded annually, which distinguish “scientific, technical, cultural, social and humanitarian work” carried out by people or institutions at an international level.

The awards ceremony takes place in October, in Oviedo, and is presided over by the Kings of Spain and their two daughters, the eldest of whom, Leonor de Borbón, is the Princess of Asturias and heir to the Spanish Crown.

Each prize consists of a sculpture by the Spanish artist Joan Miró, a diploma, a badge and 50,000 euros.
