Histórica victoria del jovén español Carlos Alcaraz en la Catedral de Wimbledon

The Spanish Carlos Alcaraz, barely 20 years old, won today his first Wimbledon tournamentby defeating the hitherto unbeatable Novak Djokovic with partials 1-6, 7-6, 6-1, 3-6 and 6-4, in a duel that lasted almost five hours.

The Serb was looking for the historic 24th Grand Slam title, in addition to the record of not losing a Wimbledon match since 2017, of which he was champion in all previous editions (2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022)until this Sunday when the Spanish beardless dethroned him.

With the first set 6-1 in favor of the Serb, the young Iberian reacted to win the second set in the tie break and a third set with an abysmal 6-1. After this, Djokovic reacted and the game lasted until the fifth setwhere the youth of Alcaraz overcame the experience of the Serbian.

At 20 years old, Alcaraz already has “two big ones”, the US Open in 2022 and now Wimbledon 2023, added to the six titles he has this year, for 12 in his record.

To all of the above, added the fact that he became the first tennis player after the mythical “Big 4” (Federer, Nadal, Murray and Djokovic) to win at Wimbledon since 2002.

As of today, Alcaraz inscribed his name in the Olympus of the winners of his country in the so-called “Tennis Cathedral”after Manolo Santana in 1966 and Rafael Nadal, who had two wins in 2008 and 2010.

After finishing the match, Carlos Alcaraz spoke about his feelings during the match and what it meant win his first trophy at Wimbledon.

“It’s a dream come true, even if I hadn’t won I would be proud to play and get here. I’m proud of myself, being so young and achieving so many things so quickly. I am proud of myself and my team that helped me to win the tournament”, said Carlos Alcaraz.

He even had words of admiration for Djokovic, his rival today, assuring that “It is an honor to play with him. When I was born, you were already winning tournaments. It’s amazing to play against you. You inspire me so much.”
