Avalanche Software barely had time to officially unveil Hogwarts Legacy before forums around the world were filled with people talking about boycotting the title because it’s set in JK Rowling’s Harry Potter universe. Those who remember all the fuss about boycotting Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in 2009 may know what such attention often leads to: new records.

Hogwarts Legacy doesn’t officially launch until Friday, but those who pre-ordered the Deluxe Edition got access to it yesterday. This led to tons of people streaming their first hours of the adventure, and even more watching them. The Twitch account reveals that Hogwarts Legacy had an incredible 1.3 million concurrent viewers on the streaming platform overnight, which is a new record for a single-player game. In addition to the enormous popularity surrounding the brand and the controversy that has been, it has of course also helped that Hogwarts Legacy is great

It’s not all good news though, as some are apparently appearing during Twitch streams to berate those “who dare” promote and/or share their love of Hogwarts Legacy or Harry Potter. Girlfriend Reviews also trended on Twitter overnight as one half of the duo broke down in tears at all the mean-spirited and downright offensive messages in the Twitch chat not to buy, stream or even mention the game. These are only isolated examples of outright hostile behavior, and thus this title will undoubtedly continue to provoke some.

Do the ends justify the means, or what do you think of this kind of bullshit reaction to people having fun with Hogwarts Legacy?
