The filming of season 2 of House of the Dragon just started, but at least one key cast member from Season 1 is missing. For the official announcement of the shooting, HBO unveiled the list of actors who will be back. And surprise, Graham McTavish who played Ser Harrold Westerling, seems to be conspicuous by his absence. Ser Harrold Westerling hasn’t been a particularly prominent character throughout season 1 of House of the Dragon, but he played a key role at the end of the series. In episode 9, as the plot to crown Aegon Targaryen is about to come true, the Lord Commander of the Royal Guard is ordered by Otto Hightower to take his knights to Dragonstone and assassinate the princess. Rhaenyra. But out of a sense of duty to the late King Viserys, he refuses the order.
Will Ser Harrold Westerling return to House of the Dragon ?
This scene marks Ser Harrold’s last appearance in season 1 of House of the Dragon, but it might not be the last time they see him on the show. The latter was indeed not killed, which means that he is probably still alive somewhere and that he is closely following the events taking place in Westeros. Given his loyalty to Viserys and, by extension, Rhaenyra, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Ser Harrold Westerling reappear at a key moment, possibly in a later season of the show.

Differences with George RR Martin’s book
If you wanted to look for clues about the fate of the character in the book Feu & Sang by George RR Martin, it’s useless: in the novel the character died long before the Dance of the Dragons began. So the Lord Commander of the Royal Guard has already been far more involved in the story than he ever was in George RR Martin’s original literary universe. If the character does not return in season 2, it will not be a shocking or major loss, due to the number of characters in House of the Dragon that screenwriters can focus on.
