ChatGPT is a very complete generative AI capable of generating text and lines of code by following simple prompts. But the chatbot also raises concerns, particularly about the confidentiality of our data and the information that we reveal to it. A thorny bug had notably revealed the history of conversations to other users. Credit card numbers had also leaked on ChatGPT on this occasion.
As the CNIL has opened an investigation in France, companies are urging their employees not to reveal sensitive information on ChatGPT. And for good reason, the latter uses them to train and therefore risks spitting them out. Despite its practicality, ChatGPT is not without risks which could lead you to delete your account. We detail the procedure in this tutorial.
How do I export my ChatGPT data?
You will not be able to recover your data once your account is deleted. Before launching the big maneuvers, it is therefore strongly recommended to get your hands on your exchanges with the chatbot. This wealth of information could be of great help to you later.
- Go to chat.openai.com then log in to your account if you haven’t already.
- Click on the three ellipsis at the bottom left next to your username.
- Click on Settings then on Show on the right of Data Controls.
- Click on Export Data then on Confirm export.
- When the export is complete, you will receive a download link by email.
- This will allow you to recover a ZIP file containing all your conversations in HTML and JSON format.
- Once done, it is advisable to delete your ChatGPT history.
- To do this, click on the ellipsis and then on Clear conversations before confirming.

How to delete a ChatGPT account?
- If you are a ChatGPT Plus subscriber, first delete your subscription before deleting your account.
- Then click on the three ellipsis and then on Settings.
- Then click on Show > Delete account.
- Log back into your account and enter your account email address.
- Write “DELETE” in the field dedicated to this purpose then click on Permanently delete my account.
