The hydrogen pilot project H2Direkt is making decisive progress: household customers in the test area sign their contracts for a heat supply with 100 percent hydrogen. In addition, Vaillant is the cooperation partner for the H2 condensing boilers. H2Direkt is part of the TransHyDE lighthouse project of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The research project shows how existing infrastructures can be used for renewable gases.

In the innovative H2Direkt research project, Thüga and Energie Südbayern (ESB), together with Energienetze Bayern, are converting an existing gas network section in Markt Hohenwart to 100 percent hydrogen. Ten households in the “Am Kerschberg II” settlement area and one commercial enterprise are to be heated with hydrogen for an initial period of around 18 months from the 2023/2024 heating period. The corresponding contracts between ESB and the customers have now been signed. “We have thus achieved an important milestone. The openness and interest of our customers in the topic of hydrogen in the heating sector is the basis for our close cooperation,” explains Mathias Stierstorfer from Energienetze Bayern, who coordinates coordination with the households involved at H2Direkt. “We are pleased that we have found open-minded hydrogen pioneers. Together with us, they are demonstrating that a climate-neutral heat supply with hydrogen works in existing gas networks.” Thüga Innovation Manager Béatrice Angleys adds: “Our signal to politicians: An efficient heating transition and security of supply are feasible if we use the existing infrastructure for renewable gases. There is currently no comparable project in this country. We are creating a blueprint for heat supply throughout Germany .”

H2 condensing boilers are installed

The conversion of the network section to pure hydrogen requires only a few structural measures on the network components. In the households, the heaters will be replaced with state-of-the-art H2 condensing boilers. As an expert in the heating industry, Vaillant is strengthening the innovation project here and is supplying 100% H2-capable condensing boilers. “Over the last four years, Vaillant has developed a hydrogen condensing boiler that has now been certified for H2Direkt and is being used in a joint field test. We are certain that H2 technologies will establish themselves in the building sector in the near future and thus become another mainstay for a climate-neutral heat supply. The technology is already mature. Field tests such as H2Direkt form the basis for the legislation of a future, climate-friendly energy supply,” says Alexander Schuh, Head of Association Management and responsible for all of Vaillant’s German hydrogen projects.

The technical conditions on site and the inventory of installations have already been recorded. The next step involves, among other things, the detailed planning for the conversion of the network. The acceptance of the local network and the indoor installations for operation with hydrogen in accordance with the regulations is carried out by experts from the DVGW (German Association for Gas and Water).

The location for the feed-in system has been determined

The location for the hydrogen trailer station and the feed-in system is also fixed. The Regens-Wagner-Foundation provides an undeveloped plot of land for this purpose. It runs an integrative facility in Hohenwart where people with and without disabilities work, live and live. The affiliated carpentry shop also purchases hydrogen for heat supply as a commercial customer within the H2Direkt research project. The climate-friendly, green hydrogen is delivered in tanks, so-called trailers.

About the hydrogen flagship projects

H2Direkt is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the TransHyDE lighthouse project. TransHyDE evaluates and tests hydrogen transport solutions. It includes four demonstration projects and five scientific projects.
