“I never assimilated the fact that he died”
It all started one evening in July. While his brother Michel was preparing to celebrate July 14 at their grandmother’s in Ardèche, Laurent Paganelli offered to celebrate it in Toulon: a few hours later, his brother died on the road. A drama that continues to haunt Laurent Paganelli. “I never assimilated the fact that he died. It’s awful, he expressed. I have always disregarded, I have always closed my eyes. I suffered internally. But outwardly, I never freed myself from that. You feel at fault. You say to yourself: ‘Damn, if I hadn’t signed in Toulon…, if you hadn’t gone to Saint-Étienne, if you hadn’t said that…’ It’s complicated, it’s a trick aberrant. You still feel responsible. And every day I wake up, you know you’re responsible. It’s terrible, it’s awful.”

“Until I join it, it’s horrible”
Laurent Paganelli also returned to the depression that followed the death of his brother: “It’s still a scar. I never cried. I could never accept it. I suffered a lot of things internally: health problems, problems of inner emptiness, blackouts… It’s been 35 years. Until I join it, it’s horrible.” In a portrait at Parisian in October 2022, his wife Carole also confided in her husband’s state of mind: “Laurent had a long depression. It was serious. Two years… He couldn’t play. He was flat. It was like an illness”, she delivered.
