Unknown persons have daubed a mural at a Holocaust memorial in the northern Italian metropolis of Milan. The picture by the Italian street artist aleXsandro Palombo shows the cartoon family “The Simpsons” and portrays them as a Jewish family deported to the Nazi concentration camps.

As seen in photos, the painting has been defaced with black smears. The so-called Jewish stars, a symbol imposed on Jews by the Nazis, which could be seen on the Simpsons’ inmate uniforms, were also covered with black paint.

Hope for citizen solidarity

According to media reports, the incident at the “Memoriale della Shoah” memorial took place yesterday. The president of the memorial, Roberto Jarach, told the newspaper “La Stampa” that surveillance cameras would be used to try to identify the perpetrator or perpetrators.

“What worries us is that we see a possible revisionist and anti-Semitic tendency in this act.” He hopes for the solidarity and empathy of the citizens of Milan in the fight against anti-Semitism.

Since 2013, the “Memoriale della Shoah” at Milan Central Station has commemorated the deportation of Italian Jews and political prisoners to German concentration and extermination camps. A total of 20 transports left platform 21 between 1943 and 1945.
