Mexico City.- If the United States wants to stop the flow of fentanyl, then it should not arm drug traffickers, warned Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard.

One day after the Summit of North American Leaders concluded, in which they agreed on a front to stop drug trafficking, the Secretary of Foreign Relations affirmed that US weapons are used to equip Mexican cartels.

“The issue of weapons, for example, the Americans see it in a completely opposite sense to ours, antagonistic.

“What do we say? They want to control the flow of fentanyl and other narcotics, so they don’t arm drug trafficking,” he said during a meeting of the Mexican diplomatic corps with deputies and senators.

He asked them if they had seen the weapons used by the criminals in the operation to capture Ovidio Guzmán, since at least 47 high-powered weapons were counted, including anti-aircraft, of all calibers and specialties.

“So, the distance between the fire capacity of our forces versus theirs is closing. They even have drones, we are talking about a bigger issue, it is not simply insisting,” he argued.

Faced with this scenario, the federal official warned that they will defend their position in the legal proceedings filed against the gun shops in North American territory.

In terms of migration, Ebrard affirmed that the key is in the US Congress, so that soon, he indicated, Mexican legislators could be required to come to speak with their peers.

He was grateful that the Chamber of Deputies approved an increase for the Secretariat for this year, which allowed the opening of 100 new positions for consulates, however, he clarified, there is still a deficit in some diplomatic headquarters and adjustments must be made.

He argued that they are working on all continents, on priority issues for Mexico.

He even presumed that they have become one of the few countries that can dialogue with all those who are fighting.

He exemplified that in the Security Council, when discussing the war in Russia and Ukraine, Mexico was in dialogue with everyone, including the British, who, he considered, “seemed like hooligans.”

“Mexico this year plans to expand, defend its political positions, our own idea of the world,” he added.

The Mexican ambassadors, who are in the country for their annual meeting, will meet tomorrow with state secretaries.
