the impeachment process in deputies will begin in February / archive

A large group of Argentine businessmen came out yesterday to speak out against the government’s project to promote a political trial of the Supreme Court of Justice, which Congress plans to address from next week in extraordinary sessions.

Through a statement, some 500 executives and professionals asked Congress not to discuss the initiative because its progress would slow down private investment. Along these lines, they stressed that respect for the division of Powers and compliance with judgments “is essential for the development of the economy.”

Among the signing executives are Facundo Gómez Minujin (JP Morgan-Amcham), Gonzalo Tanoira (ACDE-San Miguel), Arturo Acevedo (Acíndar), Cristiano Rattazzi (Fiat), Gastón Remy (Nuqlea), Roberto Murchison, Claudio Cesario (ABA ), Guibert Englebienne (Globant) and Eduardo Gorchs (Siemens Argentina).

It was also signed by Alejandro Elsztain (Cresud), Luis Bameule (AEA), Gerardo Cartellone, Carlos Miguens, Eduardo Caride, Javier Goñi (Ledesma), Juan Vaquer (Dupont), Silvia Bulla (Danisco), Nicolás Braun (La Anónima) and Enrique Cristofani. In addition, Miguel Blanco (Swiss Medical), Juan Carlos Cassagne, Máximo Founruge, Cecilia Mairal and Javier Patrón (Estudio Marval), César Litvin and Santiago Mignone (PwC), Guillermo Lipera (Idea), Alberto Garay (Colegio de Abogados de the City) and Juan Vaquer (Dupont – ACDE), among others.

Throughout a 17-page letter, the 500 businessmen and professionals asked the national deputies that make up the Impeachment Committee to “desist from the attempt to trial the Supreme Court judges.”

And in this line, they defined that institutionality is key to the development of the economy: “The National Constitution is the social pact that unites Argentines and is the framework in which all activities that take place in the country are carried out.” , they indicated.

And they warned that “respect for the division of powers and compliance with the judgments of the Judiciary are essential elements of said framework and fundamental for the existence and maintenance of private investment and job creation, the only way to reduce poverty that It affects a large part of our fellow citizens.”

“INSTITUTIONAL FAILURE”

The business association considered that it is an “institutional nonsense” to “initiate a process of impeachment against the members of the Court for not agreeing with the content of their sentences, a cause not provided for in the National Constitution.”

And in this line, they insisted on the brake on private investment due to political action. “It puts us in negative evidence in the eyes of the world, it calls into question any long-term investment decision in Argentina,” they said.

And they asked themselves: “Who is going to invest in a country that permanently changes the rules of the game and ignores the rulings of the Justice?”, they wondered.

In the last hours, the ruling party of the Chamber of Deputies of the Nation formalized the project of the request for impeachment of the members of the Court, a process that will be carried out in extraordinary sessions and where it will request to summon the four judges of the highest court and 44 other witnesses.

Signed by more than a dozen legislators from the Frente de Todos, the project has already entered Congress. That is why this group of businessmen issued the statement in which they ask to “avoid unjustified political turmoil.”

“The signatories appeal to the conscience and responsibility of the deputies so that they reflect on time, focus on the task of addressing the multiple problems that afflict our population and avoid our country a period of unjustified political turbulence that does not contribute at all. to solve these problems,” they said.

A few days ago, the Business Convergence Forum also issued a harsh statement that questioned the position of the Executive Power in relation to the decisions of the Supreme Court of Justice. The entity considered it as “an attack on the independence of the Judiciary.”

Also, there were pronouncements against the initiative, approved by the National Senate, to increase the composition of the Court from 5 to 15 members. This was stated by the Argentine Chamber of Commerce and Services (CAC), expressing its “deep concern” and the Chamber of Commerce of the United States in Argentina (Amcham Argentina), indicating that “although the justice service faces serious challenges to respond in time and form to social demands of all kinds, it is worth asking ourselves if the solution to current problems is by tripling or quintupling its number of members”.

Also. The Argentine Business Association (AEA) pointed out “the urgent need for our country to fully comply with the Rule of Law and the Division of Powers established by the National Constitution.”
