These makeshift dwellings, illegal, unsanitary, made of corrugated iron, without water or electricity, are 20,000 in number on the island. Misery spreads there, violence accompanies it, criminal gangs proliferate.

However, these “bangas”, denounced by Gérald Darmanin in particular, are not only that. It is an ancestral habitat: a small one-room house. The earthen walls, the thatched coconut palm roof… Inseparable from Mayotte culture: generations of young adolescent boys, leaving the family home, had to build it as a rite of passage to adulthood.

But for twenty years, the banga has disappeared from the Mayotte landscape, replaced by sheet metal huts.
