Chihuahua– From January 2021 to April 17 of this year, a total of 607 women have been murdered, of which only 105 cases have been classified as femicides, according to statistics from the Specialized Prosecutor for Women (FEM).
According to statistics, in 2021 there were 303 homicides of women and 46 of them were femicides. In 2022 there were 221 and 44 femicides, and so far this year there are already 83; 15 of these, femicides.
Regarding this issue, Verónica Terrazas, founder of the Alma Calma association, pointed out that violence against women is multifactorial and structural, which is why political, economic and social issues influence it.
“At this time there have been much more cases but also more cruel; more often, more cruel and viciously and I think it has to do with all the movements of different kinds and the lack of awareness about the dignity of people, and the question that even when Chihuahua has the gender alert in these five municipalities and things have been done, there is a long way to go,” said the activist.
In addition, Verónica Terrazas said that the institutions are leaving much to be desired. That there are very few resources and a lot of simulation, but not only that, but there are very few personnel.
“We need to train more personnel, but that the training is carried out by specialists who work with a gender perspective and that there is no simulation.”
In addition, the founder of Alma Calma pointed out the lack of access to justice, re-victimization and mistreatment of direct and indirect victims.
“This is also a message to society that nothing is happening; that it doesn’t matter and that violent people can keep doing what they’re doing.”
