A study carried out by researchers from the Instituto Todos pela Saúde (ITpS) and the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein shows that people reinfected by the coronavirus, as well as those who have not completed the vaccination schedule against Covid-19, are at greater risk of suffering from Covid-19 symptoms. long.
The discovery was disclosed last Friday (6/1), in an article published in a pre-print version in medRxiv platform. It also shows that women are the most affected by the symptoms of the long Covid.
Scientists analyzed data from 7,051 hospital healthcare workers infected with the coronavirus between 2020 and 2022. Of those, 1,933 (27.4%) continued to have persistent symptoms of the illness for more than four weeks.
The most common problems were headache (53.4%), muscle or joint pain (46.6%) and nasal congestion (45.1%). Five out of ten professionals (51.4%) had three or more symptoms.

Without having a definitive name, the set of symptoms that continue after the cure of the coronavirus infection is called Post-Covid Syndrome, long Covid, persistent Covid or prolonged Covid

Cases in which the symptoms of the infection last for more than 4 weeks are called long Covid. In addition, some other patients even recover quickly, but have long-term problems.

One of the most recent and comprehensive articles on the subject is from a group of universities in the United States, Mexico and Sweden. The researchers selected the most relevant publications about prolonged Covid around the world and identified 55 main symptoms

Prolonged Covid is also common after mild and moderate versions of the infection, without the patient requiring hospitalization. About 80% of people who caught the disease still had some symptoms at least two weeks after the virus was cured.

Experts believe that the long Covid may be a ′′ second wave ′′ of the damage caused by the virus in the body. The initial infection causes some people’s immune systems to go into overdrive, attacking not just the virus but the body’s own tissues.

For now, there is still no adequate treatment for this clinical condition that appears after recovery from Covid-19. The main focus is on symptom control and gradually increasing day-to-day activities

The study showed that previous infections increase the risk of long-term Covid among volunteers. Among participants who had only one infection, 25.8% continued to have symptoms after the infection period ended, and among those who got sick two or more times, the percentage was 38.9%.
Vaccination helped protect most health care workers. Only 1.5% of those who completed the vaccination schedule with four doses developed long-lasting Covid. In contrast, the recurrence of persistent symptoms among those who did not receive any dose before infection was 36.7%; 29% for those who took two doses; and 15% for those with three doses.
Finally, the study also revealed that women are up to 21% more likely to live with persistent symptoms of the disease compared to men. The researchers have not yet been able to clarify the reason, but suggest that women are more concerned about their health and tend to seek medical attention and, therefore, are diagnosed more frequently.
