Indiana: storms cause damage, power outages and leave one dead

SHOALS.- A tornado hit a house, where it killed one person and injured another in a day of bad weather in Indiana, Tennessee and other states, according to an official.

The tornado that struck the home Sunday afternoon was part of a storm system moving through Martin County, according to WXIN-TV. Another tornado struck Johnson County, south of Indianapolis, where it damaged 75 homes, according to authorities.

County Emergency Management Agency Director Cameron Wolf confirmed a death and one person injured, according to WXIN, which indicated that the home was in a rural area where the strong wind knocked down several trees.

County emergency management officials did not immediately respond to an email from The Associated Press asking for additional information about the victims and the extent of damage.

The town of Shoals, the county seat, is located 85 miles (137 kilometers) southwest of Indianapolis and 80 miles (128 kilometers) northwest of Louisville, Kentucky.

There was also a tornado in Johnson County, south of Indianapolis, causing damage in communities including Greenwood and Bargersville, according to authorities.

Michael Pruitt, a deputy with the fire department in Bargersville, Indiana, told the newspaper that a search-and-rescue operation had found no deaths or injuries related to the tornado in Johnson County after the fire department received a call about the collapse. from a structure at around 4:15 p.m. by the tornado, which lasted about 15 minutes.

Bargersville Fire Chief Erik Funkhouser said at a news conference Sunday that at least 75 homes had moderate to severe damage in a 3-mile (4.8-kilometer) zone when the tornado crossed the highway. Indiana State 135, near Interstate 69.

“Obviously this is a very dangerous situation,” Funkhouser said. “We have downed power lines in the entire 3 mile zone.”

Pruitt said affected homes could go several days without power.

Expert teams were scheduled to visit Martin, Johnson, Daviess and Monroe counties Monday to assess damage from Sunday’s storms and tornadoes, the Indianapolis office of the National Weather Service said.

In Memphis, Tennessee, a power company reported some 120,000 homes and businesses without power Sunday as storms with high winds toppled trees and caused other damage.
