Canada had their power play grind to a halt against Slovakia – to no avail. Instead, the decision came after penalty drama.

Canada hadn’t had to trouble themselves too much in their opening two World Cup battles. But after 6-0 against the host country Latvia and 5-2 against Slovenia, they had to sweat seriously on Monday.

It was a points loss against Slovakia, which was supported by thousands of loud supporters in the stands in Riga.

Canada eventually took the victory 2–1 – after a decider in the eighth round of the penalty shootout. Buffalo’s Jack Quinn managed Slovakian keeper Samuel Hlavaj, who saved 42 shots in the game.

During regular time, the Canadians had time to get frustrated. Despite 19 Slovakian expulsion minutes, there was no goal on the power play – which, among other things, caused captain Tyler Toffoli to strike the stick in anger in the second period.

In the second period, star defender Mackenzie Weegar went into the rim with his head after an ugly tackle by Libor Hudacek, who received a match penalty. Florida defenseman Weegar was still able to return to the game after the second-period hit.

Germany continues to lose tight

From a Finnish perspective, it would have been welcome if Germany had managed to grab points from the USA. And of course the Germans managed to mess with their resistance – without being rewarded.

Instead, Germany suffered its third straight odd-goal loss.

Samuel Soramies set up a German 1-1 tie in the middle period and Justin Schutz put the team ahead just before the break. In the third period, it was the USA’s turn to turn.
