Is it time to go out and jump in the pool? Yes, then it is of course convenient to be able to keep track of the temperature remotely. There are lots of different solutions for that, more or less expensive. This little thing from Inkbird will cost you just under five hundred and it does the job really well.

Opinion

This is a convenient solution for keeping track of the temperature in the pool or pond. Hopefully it will also hold tight over a longer period of time.

Positive

  • Feels solid
  • Small and discreet receiver
  • Support for three thermometers
  • Cheap

Negative

  • Doesn’t come close to promised range
  • No alarm for deviations

It’s really hard to determine the quality of a gadget like this that will be in water for a long time/permanently, but the construction of the thermometer/transmitter feels robust with a solid rubber gasket. And after about two weeks in the pool, there hasn’t been a leak or the slightest hint of fogging in the small LCD screen on the top. The package is already synced and ready so when I put batteries in both devices it only takes a few seconds for them to connect.

The thermometer/transmitter seems to hold tight.

The receiver unit is a small discreet screen with sharp and clear characters that you can easily read from a distance of 3-4 meters if you have decent eyesight. On the receiver, you can also see the indoor temperature (or where you have the receiver) as well as the maximum value the thermometer registered in the last 24 hours.

The range is stated at 90 meters but that is clearly an exaggerated figure. 30-35 meters we can go before we lose the signal and even with only 7-8 meters between the units (as well as a wooden wall) we lost signal at one point. Compared to an alternative, the TFA Dostman that we previously tested, however, the signal is more reliable with the Inkbird thermometer. Worth mentioning is that the Dostman meter started fogging up again only to finally die completely at the end of last year’s season.

Test Inkbird IBS-P01R
The receiver is easy to read, small and discreet.

Inkbird IBS-P01R can be connected to three separate thermometers, which is practical. If you have three pools. But you might have a goldfish pond on your property. Or maybe both pool and spa bath? If you live in luxury, the question is whether you shouldn’t spend on an even better solution for remote monitoring and remote control of your gadgets than with a 500 kroner kit from Amazon…

The big benefit I see with this kit is that you can keep track of whether the pool heater has been turned off for your newly purchased Chinese inflatable spa bath. Unfortunately, these have a tendency to shut down due to various errors. I know, I’ve cut down a bunch of these myself and changed the pump several times. Then it’s good to have a warning beforehand so you don’t have to stand there in just the brass with your plastic glass of cava on a Friday night. Only to find it’s 17 degrees and cloudy in your “pool”. Been there, done that…
