Rumor has it that the price of the 2024 iPad Pro will be exorbitant, because of its hybrid OLED screen which will make it thinner. LG, which provides Apple with screens, would therefore be working on a new technology to reduce production costs.

It’s been rumored for a while that Apple is preparing 11.1 and 13-inch OLED iPad Pros for 2024. New reports from supply chains confirm that this new version of the iPad Pro will be equipped with an OLED screen. But not just any, since it will be a hybrid OLED burning technology that will produce a thinner tablet, provided by LG Display to Apple.

While OLED displays typically use two glass substrates, hybrid OLED replaces the top layer with a thin-film encapsulation layer or Thin Film Encapsulation (TFE) in the language of Shakespeare. TFE enables stronger, lighter and more flexible AMOLED devices. At the same time, the glass layer is etched so as to be even thinner than before, around 0.2 mm instead of the 0.5 mm of a normal layer.

LG is working to reduce the price of the 2024 iPad Pro

According to The Elec, LG has started working on a new engraving technology to produce the displays. Etching is the process of removing unnecessary areas from the display, thereby reducing its weight. However, with this one-piece display panel, the glass can be broken simply by transporting it to the engraving production line. The necessary precautions and the delicacy of the production process explain the rumors that the new iPad Pro 2024 will cost more than a MacBook Pro with M2 chip.

LG would therefore work on a system to cut and engrave the screen in a single operation, without moving it. Because in theory, the TFE should make it possible to reduce production costs, since thanks to this very thin single layer, it makes it possible to save the addition of a layer of backlighting to the screen.

LG reportedly intends to apply this new process to its OLED Gen 8 production line. The company is already producing Gen 6 OLED panels for Apple, which will continue to be used in the iPad Pro line until the system launches. Gen 8.

Now the question of the battery arises: with such a thin device, will the firm at the apple be able to maintain a lifespan worthy of the name?
